Uozu lacquerware began with the migration of woodworkers from Hida toward the end of the Muromachi period, and by the Taisho period, the area flourished, with 69 production households. This region is the largest producer of lacquerware in the Hokuriku region, and, blessed with abundant beech and horse chestnut wood, it specialized in durable, practical everyday utensils. Much of the business was lost in the Uozu fire of 1956, and today only one household continues to preserve the tradition. The smoothly curved shape of the bowl feels comfortable in the hand, and the more it is used, the more it will develop a lustrous appearance.
