A French carriage clock with a brass cornice-shaped case fitted with beveled glass on four sides. It is thought to have been made between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and the white porcelain dial, with its aged brass patina and blued steel hands, gives it an elegant appearance. The inscription on the dial conveys the rich background in which British and French watch cultures intersected.

Details

Developed in France in the 19th century, carriage clocks have been widely loved by Europe's upper classes as the pinnacle of portable clocks that combine precise mechanical technology and sophisticated design.
