This is a masterpiece of Inuyama ware by Ozeki Sakujuro II, who was active from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji era. Unkinde is a design that depicts cherry blossoms and autumn leaves on the same screen, and is imbued with the unique Japanese aesthetic sense of simultaneously expressing the beauty of spring and autumn.
The interior and exterior of the bowl are decorated with alternating crimson maple leaves and green maple leaves, and delicately painted cherry blossom branches. The colorful dots evoke the image of falling petals and fluttering leaves, poetically expressing the changing of the seasons. The milky white glaze on the base has developed a tasteful crazing and texture over time, evoking the weight of history that only an antique can have.
A blue inscription remains on the base, attesting to the maker and kiln. The construction of the foot and the brushwork of the painting convey the precision of handwork from the late Edo to Meiji periods. Ozeki Sakujuro Pottery Studio is a representative kiln of Inuyama ware, and this piece is a valuable document in the history of Japanese ceramics.
Recommended usage and applications
If used as a sweets bowl at a tea ceremony, it will add elegance to Japanese sweets. The Unkinde design can be used in all seasons, which is why it is such a valuable tea ceremony utensil.
In everyday use, they decorate the dining table as vessels for serving fruit and sweets. Considering their value as antiques, we recommend displaying them on a decorative shelf or alcove. They have a presence that makes them a striking accent in tea rooms and Japanese-style rooms, as well as in modern spaces. The joy of holding historic vessels in your hands and using them while feeling the atmosphere of the eras that stretched from the Edo to Meiji periods is the true joy of antiques. They are also highly valued as collector's items, making them the perfect gift for lovers of Japanese ceramics.
Interior coordination proposals
In a tea room or modern Japanese space, placing it on a tokonoma alcove or staggered shelf and combining it with hanging scrolls and seasonal flowers will embody dignified Japanese beauty. Displaying it together with a lacquerware tea tray, a bamboo tea scoop, and a rug made from antique cloth will create an authentic tea ceremony world filled with history. The delicate Unkinde painting will stand out when illuminated softly with indirect lighting.
In a minimalist modern living room, the beauty of antiques will stand out when simply placed on a glass cabinet or white display shelf. The red and green colors of this pot add an accent to a monochrome space, bringing a touch of warmth to a sophisticated atmosphere. The contrast with Scandinavian furniture and concrete walls is also appealing, creating a unique space where tradition and modernity are in harmony.
