A bone china dessert dish made by Davenport & Co. (1794-1887), based in Longport, Staffordshire. It is thought to have been created in the mid-late Victorian period. The oblong shape with elegant openwork handles on the left and right sides is combined with a scalloped edge, rich gold color, and turquoise blue dot decoration, giving the entire vessel a light and gorgeous feel. In the center of the white porcelain, pale pink flowers are drawn with emotional brushstrokes.

Details

For 93 years, from 1794 to 1887, Davenport continued to build an unwavering position both domestically and internationally as one of Britain's leading ceramic manufacturers. It is said that during its heyday during the Victorian era, it boasted a level that rivaled other famous kilns in producing elaborate dessert services.

Davenport is known to have created a series of hand-painted botanicals that were accurate copies of the illustrations published in Curtis' Botanical Magazine from around 1830 to 1845, and this work is thought to be in the same vein. The pale pink flower depicted in the center has an elegant appearance reminiscent of rhododendrons or clematis, reflecting the deep interest in botany that was widespread in British society at the time and the admiration for exotic plants. The scalloped edges are lined with hand-carved watermarks, surrounded by a turquoise blue dot pattern, and the rocaille-style gold color adds a touch of class to the whole piece. The blue printing with an anchor visible on the reverse and the pattern number "1073" in red are consistent with the typical marking style found on porcelain from this kiln.
