A bone china compote dish made by Davenport & Co. (1794-1887), based in Longport, Staffordshire. The elegant form with a raised platform, gorgeously colored scalloped edges, and rich gold color convey the rich aesthetic sense of the mid-to-late Victorian era. In the center of the vessel, an exotic flower, thought to be passiflora (clockweed), is carefully drawn in brush strokes, and turquoise dot decoration adds an accent.

Details

For 93 years, from its founding in 1794 until its closure in 1887, Davenport boasted a high reputation both domestically and internationally as one of Britain's largest ceramic manufacturers. It is said that during its heyday in the mid-19th century, it boasted an unrivaled level of precision in the production of elaborate dessert services.

Davenport is known to have created a series of hand-painted botanicals that were accurate copies of the illustrations in Curtis' Botanical Magazine from around 1830 to 1845, and this piece is considered to be part of that lineage. Decorating the center of the vessel is a flower with impressive radial petals, believed to be Passiflora (clockweed), which is native to South America. The choice of subject is typical of the Victorian era, which had a strong interest in exotic plants. The edges are lined with hand-carved openwork scallops, surrounded by a turquoise blue dot pattern, and topped off with rocaille-style gold. The blue printing with an anchor visible on the reverse and the red pattern number match the typical marking style found on porcelain from the same kiln.
