This vase was made by Karasaburo Kiln, a prestigious family that was summoned to serve as the official kiln shop of the Owari Tokugawa family in 15th year of the Keicho era, during the time of Kato Karasaburo Kagesada, the 19th generation, and was allowed to use his surname and sword. Akatsu ware flourished as the official kiln of the Owari Tokugawa family, with various glaze techniques such as Shino, Oribe, Kiseto, and Ofukai established from the Momoyama period to the early Edo period. This piece is coated with a glaze that ranges from deep green to almost black, creating a unique landscape with bright spots and horizontal stripes appearing in layers on the surface. The elongated pot-shaped form gives it a classy appearance.

Currently, the 31st generation, Tozaburo Kato, who took over the name in 1991, continues the tradition, and this vase is made by his predecessor, the 30th generation. Akatsu ware is characterized by its seven glazes and 12 decorative techniques, and the seven glazes used are ash glaze, iron glaze, Furuseto, Kiseto, Oribe, Shino, and Mifukai. The deep colors seen in this vase are the result of a glaze that contains a lot of iron, and the natural flow and spots created by the movement of the flame during firing give it a different look depending on the viewing angle. The traces of the potter's wheel remain quietly, giving you a sense of the warmth of handiwork.
